July Unemployment rate at four-year high
The unemployment rate in July has been the highest since the past four years! The Labor Department says the nation's unemployment rate climbed to a four-year high of 5.7 percent in July. The high unemployment rate is an evidence of just how much the housing down turn and energy price’s increase have caused. The first step people might take when they are out of job is to apply for the unemployment insurance. However, according to the report, many people are not eligible for the insurance. Peterson, the institute of the International Economics, said that it is the “best kept secret” that many people think the unemployment insurance is for everyone; however, only one-third people are qualified for the benefit. For instance, those who are out of part time jobs, temporary jobs or leaving work for family reasons are not qualified. The reporter even interviews a woman who has been out of work for about a year! She quitted her job after she heard her boss said:” I really think she should take her bag”. But as she applied for the insurance, what she received was an unpleasant notice that she is ineligible because they thought she was volunteered to quit!
Then, Peterson tells us that even someone is lucky enough to be qualified for the found, there isn’t much help since the insurance is only provide less than one-third payment.
The unemployment insurance system is created during the Depression. But since the labor market has changed enormously—for instance, the part-time workers—the rules in some states have never changed! In order to open the insurance to more people in need, the Congress now are discussing for a bill to give the states money to modernize the system.
